On May 20, Mexico's Minister of Economic Affairs, Ebrard, announced that the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative had introduced new measures indicating that automobiles assembled in Mexico and destined for export to the United States would be subject to an average tariff rate of 15%, a reduction from the initial base rate of 25%. The exact tariff rate will be determined by the specific vehicle manufacturer and model under the terms of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Ebrard noted that this outcome stemmed from negotiations between Mexican and American officials, and that he would continue discussions in Washington this week. It is reported that over 80% of Mexico's light vehicles are exported to the United States.
