On May 17, China's Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) introduced two new energy vehicle models, the AION Y and Trumpchi ES9, into the Ethiopian market for the first time. This move is aimed at accelerating the country's green transportation transformation and further strengthening cooperation between China and Ethiopia in the automotive industry. According to Balew Hassan, State Minister of Transport and Logistics of Ethiopia, there are currently over 100,000 electric vehicles on Ethiopian roads, and the government aims to increase this figure to 500,000 within the next decade, with the eventual goal of phasing out fuel vehicles.
Wei Haigang, General Manager of GAC International, emphasized that GAC is not merely providing products but is also committed to establishing a comprehensive value chain system in Ethiopia that encompasses research and development, production, sales, service, and infrastructure construction. Within the next three years, GAC plans to launch five new energy vehicle models in the Ethiopian market, thereby contributing Chinese expertise and innovation to Africa's green transportation transformation.
