On May 15, media outlets reported that a Pony.ai self-driving vehicle caught fire on May 13 after an incident in Yizhuang, Beijing, involving a roadside green belt. A Pony.ai spokesperson clarified that at approximately 9:30 a.m. on May 13, the vehicle was detected to be in an abnormal state during its operation. At the time, there were no passengers in the vehicle, and the built-in safety mechanisms were promptly activated to bring the car to an emergency stop. Notably, no collision occurred, and no injuries were reported. Within two minutes of the incident, staff arrived at the scene, but unfortunately, the vehicle caught fire during the initial handling phase. Pony.ai has been cooperating fully with relevant authorities to manage the situation appropriately, and the exact cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
