On March 28, Ontario Premier Doug Ford disclosed that U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick had stated on March 27 that Canadian-made cars entering the United States would be exempt from tariffs if they contain more than 50% U.S. components. Ford revealed that he received this information during a 25-minute phone conversation with Lutnick late on March 26. Specifically, vehicles imported from Canada to the U.S. that comprise over 50% American-made parts will be tariff-free. Conversely, Canadian-assembled cars with less than 50% U.S. content will incur a 12.5% tariff.
