Japan's seven leading automakers are poised to endure a prolonged period of performance decline, marked by operating profits shrinking for two consecutive quarters. While sales rose by 3% from October to December 2024, global sales dipped by 2%. Projections indicate that profits will continue to dwindle in the first quarter of 2025, with a potential further decline anticipated in the second quarter. Five automakers, notably Toyota and Nissan, have witnessed profit erosion due to intensified competition in the US market, heightened sales incentives, and escalating costs associated with electric vehicle development and labor. Conversely, Honda and Suzuki have reported profit growth amidst this challenging landscape.
