Tesla is encountering significant regulatory challenges as it attempts to expand its 'Full Self-Driving' (FSD) system beyond North America, especially in the UK and other European regions. The UK's Department for Transport (DfT) is currently drafting new regulations aimed at restricting the functionality of autonomous driving systems, such as Tesla's FSD, which could potentially postpone its full-scale deployment in Europe until 2028. These new regulations will drastically limit the scope of autonomous operations, permitting lane changes only on highways under conditions where the driver's hands remain on the wheel. UK officials emphasize that while driver assistance systems have the potential to reduce accidents, they may also introduce new safety risks. Consequently, they recommend a phased rollout approach, accompanied by rigorous evaluations of safety issues.
