On November 4, Tekedra Mawakana, co-CEO of Alphabet's autonomous driving company Waymo, announced that the company has ended its exclusive robotaxi partnership with Uber. The move is aimed at addressing customer demand for more reliable booking of autonomous mobility services through a unified platform. Currently, in Austin and Atlanta, users can only book Waymo vehicles through the Uber platform. Waymo plans to launch services on its own app in these cities in January 2028, at which point competition between the two sides will further intensify. Mawakana said the reason for adjusting the partnership model is that local passengers cannot guarantee getting a Waymo vehicle—although they can select an autonomous vehicle in the Uber app, a successful match is only possible when an available vehicle is nearby.
