According to Electrek, Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed on the X platform that the drive motors of the Cybercab self-driving taxi do not use rare earth metals, while maintaining a range comparable to conventional rare earth permanent magnet motors. This news was disclosed by Tesla investor Sawyer Merritt following the Cybercab unveiling in Austin on September 3 and was personally reposted and confirmed by Musk. The Cybercab's drive motor features a simplified hairpin stator and a new lubrication system, reducing volume by 18% and weight by 25%. With a rated power of 163kW, it achieves a range of approximately 673 kilometers when paired with a 47.6kWh battery pack. Tesla has achieved high efficiency in its rare earth-free motor through technological innovations such as adopting a Halbach array magnet arrangement, increasing the proportion of reluctance torque, raising the copper wire slot fill factor to 70%, and elevating motor speed to over 15,000 RPM. This move not only reduces motor material costs (rare earth permanent magnets typically account for 25% to 35% of total motor material costs) but also enhances supply chain security, particularly given that global rare earth refining and processing are primarily concentrated in China. However, the motor has currently only been confirmed for the Cybercab, and its compatibility with other high-power models such as the Model Y and Cybertruck remains uncertain.
