The six-seater flagship SUV Model Y L, produced at Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory, has come under fire from owners due to rear wheel sag problems emerging less than a year after its market release. Numerous owners have reported that after carrying full loads or driving long distances, the gap between the rear wheel arch and the tire significantly narrows. In severe cases, the space is so limited that barely a finger can fit. Some owners have observed wheel sag after just 9,000 kilometers, with the rear end noticeably drooping; others reported similar issues after 30,000 kilometers, with the rear wheel gap reduced to just the width of two fingers. This causes the vehicle body to sway during driving and poses a risk of scraping the chassis. In addition, the sagging leads to suspension droop, misaligning the wheels and resulting in abnormal inner tire wear. Some owners have reported that their tires have worn down to the safety markings. While spring replacements are covered under warranty, owners are left to bear the cost of tire wear. In response to owner complaints, Tesla has yet to issue a public statement, with customer service only recommending scheduled dealership inspections. Tesla aftersales representatives have stated that a rear wheel arch ground clearance of 784±20mm is within the normal range, and spring replacement is only supported if the clearance falls below 764mm. Many owners have devised a simple self-check method: park the vehicle on level ground, crouch down, and insert fingers into the rear wheel arch gap. A gap of about four fingers’ width is considered normal, three fingers warrant caution, and two-and-a-half fingers likely indicate a problem. However, owners have found that repeated spring replacements only offer temporary relief, and they hope the manufacturer will identify the root cause, provide a comprehensive solution, and eliminate driving safety hazards.
