Cui Dongshu, representing the Passenger Car Association, reported that between January and July 2026, the automotive sector witnessed a total production output of 17.61 million vehicles, marking a 3% decline year-on-year. Specifically, the production of new energy vehicles (NEVs) surged to 8.95 million units, reflecting a notable 10% increase compared to the previous year, and achieving a market penetration rate of 51%. Conversely, the production of fuel-powered vehicles experienced a significant downturn, with 8.67 million units produced, a 14% decrease from the year before. During this same timeframe, the auto industry's aggregate revenue amounted to 6,078 billion yuan, showing a modest 2.7% growth year-on-year. Meanwhile, the total costs escalated to 5,405.8 billion yuan, up by 3.8%. Notably, the total profits dwindled to 216.2 billion yuan, a stark 20% decrease compared to the previous year. Consequently, the industry's profit margin settled at a mere 3.6%, falling short of the average 6.5% profit margin observed among downstream industrial enterprises.
