Recently, the domestic automotive sector has been embroiled in controversy due to the rise of 'rushed-to-market vehicles.' This term describes a scenario where certain automakers, in their haste to capture market share, drastically curtail the research, development, and testing phases for new models. They may even bypass crucial design verification and mass production validation processes. As a result, consumers inadvertently become 'test drivers,' potentially facing safety hazards. Conventionally, the development timeline for internal combustion engine vehicles stretches beyond 36 months. Yet, some new energy vehicle models have seen their development cycles slashed to just 18 months or even shorter. This trend was particularly pronounced in the first half of 2026, with over 576 new vehicle models making their debut domestically, averaging nearly 100 launches per month.
However, the rash of quality issues plaguing these rushed-to-market vehicles, including battery malfunctions and software glitches, has triggered frequent recalls and undermined consumer confidence. Executives from automakers and industry experts have voiced their criticism of this practice, stressing that automotive development must respect objective laws and should not sacrifice safety for speed. Regulatory bodies have stepped up to tackle the issue, proposing to extend the reliability driving test mileage for new energy vehicles to 30,000 kilometers, bringing it in line with the standards for internal combustion engine vehicles. They also plan to conduct special inspections on automakers' production consistency.
Despite technological advancements like simulation testing and platform-based development enhancing research and development efficiency, real-world road testing and extreme condition testing remain indispensable. Automakers should strive to strike a balance between efficiency and quality, ensuring that every new vehicle undergoes rigorous validation rather than leaving consumers to shoulder the risks of untested products.
