The Idaho National Laboratory, under the US Department of Energy, is investigating whether LiDAR sensors manufactured in China, if widely used in US vehicles, would pose a national security risk. According to anonymous sources familiar with the matter, the review is funded by one or more companies in the electric and autonomous vehicle industry, though the specific funders remain unclear. Companies such as Rivian, General Motors, and Ford stated they were unaware of the review, while Nvidia, Zoox, and Aurora did not respond when asked about their involvement. Chinese LiDAR suppliers Hesai Technology and RoboSense also did not respond to requests for comment.
