Chery is set to establish a passenger vehicle research and development (R&D) center in Bedfordshire, UK, as part of its strategic move to further bolster its presence in the UK market. The new facility is slated to commence operations in late autumn, with its R&D activities primarily centered on tailoring vehicles to suit the unique road conditions of the UK. In the longer term, the center's scope will encompass the development of autonomous driving and artificial intelligence technologies. Additionally, Chery has outlined plans to engage and hire local talent on a sustained basis.
Earlier this year, in February, Chery unveiled a new brand, Lepas, meticulously crafted to cater to the preferences and demands of the European market. Fast forward to June, the company inked a pivotal cooperation agreement with Nissan, paving the way for Chery models to be manufactured at Nissan's Sunderland plant. This strategic alliance is poised to enable Chery to circumvent import tariffs and trade barriers, effectively lowering the entry barriers into the European market.
