On July 29, Waymo, a subsidiary under Google's parent company Alphabet, introduced the integration of the Gemini conversational AI assistant into its Ojai self-driving car, specifically tailored for ride-hailing services. This launch was accompanied by a revamped in-car interface. Passengers now have the convenience to ask for information, modify certain in-car settings, and even request a stop, all through the screen or voice commands. It's important to note that the AI assistant functions autonomously from the driving system, meaning it does not govern the vehicle's movement or route planning, nor does it have access to real-time driving data. This new in-car interface marks Waymo's first significant update in years, emphasizing key features such as trip details and music management. The Ojai is outfitted with three screens, each displaying distinct content depending on the passenger's seating position. Additionally, it offers a Calm Mode, which dims the screens for a more relaxed atmosphere. Waymo intends to extend invitations to more members of the public to experience the Ojai in the near future.
