Recently, a car owner, Mr. Liu, embarked on a cross-border self-driving adventure in his new energy vehicle, which he had bought just six months prior. On the second day after entering Kazakhstan (July 16), the manufacturer remotely locked the vehicle's infotainment system for more than 30 hours, disabling the vehicle's smart functionalities. As a result, he couldn't unlock the storage compartment to access important documents or refuel, severely disrupting his trip. Mr. Liu mentioned that before setting off, he had taken his car to the dealership for maintenance and informed them of his international travel plans. However, he was not cautioned about the necessity to report his travel or the potential risk of remote locking. In response, the manufacturer stated that vehicles purchased domestically are primarily designed for domestic use. The remote locking was implemented as a measure against theft and unauthorized resale. Road trips abroad are highly likely to prompt remote locking, and this cannot be prevented by prior notification. Car owners are required to request temporary unlocking after an error code appears on the vehicle's infotainment system, and such unlocking is restricted to a single region. Cross-border travel spanning multiple countries may lead to repeated lockouts, with a second unlocking necessitating only the upload of a new error code. This incident has ignited a public debate on the extent of control over smart vehicles.
