Swiss locomotive manufacturer Stadler, in collaboration with Sardinian public transport operator ARST, has recently unveiled the world’s first hydrogen fuel train tailored specifically for narrow-gauge railways. This milestone represents a significant leap forward in the decarbonization efforts of the railway network in southern Italy. Due to the stringent axle load requirements inherent to narrow-gauge railways, existing hydrogen-powered trains cannot be directly retrofitted for this purpose. To overcome this challenge, the new train features a lightweight aluminum body and was meticulously designed from the ground up to comply with the structural and weight specifications necessary for narrow-gauge operation.
