The autonomous driving startup Nuro, backed by NVIDIA and Uber, has been granted permission to test its Lucid Gravity SUVs equipped with self-driving technology on public roads in California. These vehicles will be used for Uber's premium autonomous ride-hailing service in the future. Nuro is not yet ready to commence testing immediately, with plans to begin later this year. Nuro has held a driverless testing permit for six years, previously applicable only to low-speed delivery vehicles, but has now shifted to licensing its technology to companies like Uber. The updated permit allows Nuro to test Lucid vehicles without human safety operators. Currently, Nuro and Uber are still conducting autonomous tests with human safety operators, having expanded last month to allow Uber employees to request rides in Lucid robotaxis via the app.
