On April 9, multiple industry insiders revealed that Sunwoda Electric, a subsidiary of Sunwoda specializing in power battery operations, has successfully secured a place in Tesla’s global supply chain, becoming its fifth supplier of power batteries. Sources within the industry chain reported that the relevant batteries have already been dispatched from Sunwoda’s factory in Yiwu, Zhejiang Province, and are now being utilized in Tesla models produced at its Shanghai plant for overseas markets. These batteries “have been in transit for some time,” according to the sources. In this collaboration, Tesla has adopted a novel approach by directly procuring battery cells from Sunwoda, while taking on the responsibility for in-house manufacturing of the modules and PACK (battery pack) assemblies. This marks a significant departure from Tesla’s previous practice of purchasing complete modules from CATL, representing a fresh exploration by Tesla in the realm of prismatic battery technology.
