On April 2, Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that Stellantis Group is in discussions with its Chinese partner Leapmotor about plans to produce electric vehicles in Canada, with negotiations focusing on an idle assembly plant in Brampton, Ontario. Previously, Stellantis canceled plans to produce Jeep SUVs at the plant due to tariff issues, sparking dissatisfaction from the Canadian government. In 2023, Stellantis acquired a 20% stake in Leapmotor and established a joint venture, Leapmotor International. If the project moves forward, it would mark the first major Chinese automotive investment in Canada following the reduction of tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles.
