On March 31, 2026, Bernie Moreno, a Republican senator from the United States, announced his intention to introduce legislation the following month aimed at imposing a total ban on Chinese automakers' access to the U.S. market. This proposed ban would not only restrict the importation of fully assembled vehicles but also cut off avenues such as hardware and software supply, as well as joint ventures. Prior to this, the five leading U.S. automotive groups had collectively petitioned the government, urging for a complete blockade of Chinese automakers. In response, the Chinese Embassy in the United States condemned the move, stating that it contravenes the principles of a market economy and fair competition, represents classic protectionism and economic coercion, and that China firmly opposes such actions.
