BMW had previously outfitted some of its models with Level 3 autonomous driving systems. However, given that the technology failed to meet the criteria for commercial profitability, the company has opted to temporarily deprioritize research and development efforts on Level 3 autonomous driving projects. Oliver Zipse, the Global CEO of BMW Group, announced at the fiscal year meeting for 2026 that this decision does not signify BMW's withdrawal from the pursuit of higher-level autonomous driving technologies. Instead, BMW remains committed to keeping a close eye on emerging trends in the field of autonomous driving. The company is poised to promptly resume relevant research and development activities as soon as a viable commercialization model for higher-level autonomous driving technologies becomes apparent.
