On March 8, in West Covina, California, a Tesla Model 3 operating in FSD (Full Self-Driving) mode at around 37 kilometers per hour approached lowered railroad crossing gates. The system failed to detect the obstacle or slow down, resulting in the vehicle crashing directly through the gates. Fortunately, no train was approaching at the time, averting potentially more severe consequences. This incident unfolded amid an ongoing investigation by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) into Tesla’s FSD system. Moreover, the day after the crash marked the final deadline for Tesla to submit relevant violation data to the NHTSA.
