In February 2026, Chinese automotive brands made a remarkable splash in the UK passenger car market, achieving sales of 11,364 units. This impressive figure represents a substantial 81.0% surge compared to the same period the previous year. Their market share climbed to 10.8%, a milestone as it has now exceeded 10% for two months running. Moreover, for four consecutive months, Chinese brands have outsold their Japanese counterparts, propelling them to the esteemed position of the second-largest vehicle segment in the UK market.
During this same timeframe, the overall sales in the UK passenger car market reached 90,100 units, marking a 7.2% increase year-on-year. From January to February, the cumulative sales amounted to 234,227 units, a 4.9% rise compared to the previous year. This growth was primarily fueled by automakers' intensified promotional activities, aimed at aligning with zero-emission regulations.
From the start of 2026 through February, the cumulative sales of Chinese brands in the UK soared to 31,376 units, a staggering 103.0% increase year-on-year. Their cumulative market share stood at 11.7%, surpassing Japanese brands by a notable 1.5 percentage points.
In terms of energy types, the UK's electric vehicle sales in February witnessed a modest 2.8% year-on-year increase, accompanied by a dip in market share. Conversely, sales of plug-in hybrid models experienced a robust 43.5% year-on-year growth, coupled with an uptick in market share.
