Following nearly two decades of protracted negotiations, on February 27, 2026, the South Korean government finally gave its conditional nod to Google, permitting the tech giant to offer high-precision mapping services within its borders. This approval allows Google to export digital map data at a detailed 1:5,000 scale, all the while ensuring that sensitive information, such as the locations of military bases, remains under strict government oversight. Under the terms of this agreement, Google is mandated to process all relevant data on servers located within South Korea. The data can only be utilized for navigation services after undergoing a thorough government review. Additionally, Google must adhere to stringent conditions, including the blurring of sensitive facilities and the removal of coordinate markers, to safeguard national security interests.
