Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) were once seen as a compromise between reducing emissions and saving fuel. However, the latest large-scale real-world vehicle data shows that their fuel consumption during daily use is significantly higher than the official values announced by manufacturers. The Fraunhofer Institute in Germany analyzed approximately 1 million PHEVs produced between 2021 and 2023 and found that their actual average fuel consumption is about 6 liters per 100 kilometers, three times the certified fuel consumption value, raising concerns about the discrepancy between test standards and real-world performance.
