Recently, Gordon Wagener, the erstwhile Chief Design Officer of Mercedes-Benz, unveiled a clandestine concept car in his latest book, Iconic Design. This car serves as a tribute to the legendary ‘Red Pig’ (300 SEL 6.8 AMG), a racing car that catapulted to fame during the 1971 24 Hours of Spa race. The new concept car boasts a front adorned with a chrome-plated grille, complemented by a trident-style light cluster and an array of circular daytime running lights. Its body is outfitted with contemporary front lips, side skirts, and a rear diffuser, all while maintaining a rounded silhouette that pays homage to the 1950s ‘Ponton’ sedan. The paint scheme mirrors the classic red hue of the ‘Red Pig,’ albeit with fictional sponsor names replacing the real ones. This car seamlessly blends classic racing elements with a modern design ethos, epitomizing Mercedes-Benz’s harmonious balance between its rich historical legacy and its relentless pursuit of innovation.
