On January 16, reports emerged that during a media interview, Canadian authorities announced positive adjustments to measures concerning the export of Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) to Canada. In response, an official from the Department of American and Oceanian Affairs at China’s Ministry of Commerce stated that the Chinese side has taken note of Canada’s announcement. In 2024, Canada imposed an additional 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles, significantly impacting China’s EV exports to the Canadian market. According to the latest revisions, Canada will allocate an annual import quota of 49,000 electric vehicles from China. Vehicles falling within this quota will be subject to a most-favored-nation tariff rate of 6.1% and will no longer incur the additional 100% tariff. Additionally, the quota is set to increase proportionally each year. The Chinese side views this as a positive step by Canada and anticipates that it will facilitate greater market access for Chinese electric vehicles in Canada. China hopes that Canada will honor its commitments in a pragmatic manner and continue collaborating with China toward shared objectives, fostering a fairer, more stable, and non-discriminatory environment for bilateral EV trade and investment cooperation through friendly consultations. Meanwhile, China looks forward to both countries’ industrial sectors seizing this opportunity to strengthen cooperation and achieve mutual benefits and win-win outcomes.
