On January 16, drawing on comprehensive reports from renowned foreign media outlets, including Agence France-Presse and The New York Times, it was revealed that Canadian Prime Minister Kearney, who is on an official visit to China, declared that Canada would permit the import of up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles into the Canadian market. These vehicles will be subject to the most-favored-nation tariff rate of 6.1%, effectively reinstating the tariff level to its pre-trade friction status. The New York Times highlighted that this move signifies a notable policy reversal, unveiled by Kearney during his "historic" visit to Beijing. Earlier, in 2024, responding to a request from the Biden administration in the United States, Canada had imposed a hefty 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles.
