On December 24, Waymo issued a statement regarding the power outage incident caused by Pacific Gas and Electric Company, stating that the large-scale power outage and the significant number of affected traffic lights were the primary reasons for the city-wide traffic paralysis. Responding to such large-scale incidents poses a challenge for autonomous driving technology. Currently, Waymo is comprehensively updating its fleet to provide drivers with power outage information to assist them in decision-making and will improve its emergency response procedures.
