The inaugural 2025 Automotive Steel Supply and Demand Symposium convened in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. During the event, Luo Tiejun, Vice President of the China Iron and Steel Industry Association (CISA), emphasized that the automotive sector stands as a pivotal downstream and high-end consumer of steel. The rise of new automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) has reshaped the traditional automotive steel supply-demand dynamics and supply chain framework. Pricing mechanisms such as bidding and procurement have sparked 'over-competition' among steel firms, adversely affecting the interests of various stakeholders. Luo Tiejun urged steel companies to resist such cutthroat competition and expressed hope for acknowledgment and proactive engagement from the automotive industry.
Chen Shihua, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), highlighted that both the automotive and steel sectors command substantial global market shares. Presently, the automotive industry confronts numerous challenges. The communication platform established at this symposium is poised to foster joint innovation between upstream and downstream industries, thereby promoting sustainable industry growth.
Liu Biao, Deputy Director of the Market Research Department at CISA, noted that Chinese steel endows downstream industries with a competitive advantage. Although overall steel demand may decline in the future, the automotive steel sector still harbors growth potential. The steel industry remains committed to supplying high-quality products to the automotive sector.
