Rivian, the American electric vehicle (EV) maker and a direct competitor to Tesla, has made public its in-house development of artificial intelligence (AI) chips, a cutting-edge generation of onboard computers, and corresponding AI models. These advancements are strategically positioned to supplant the existing NVIDIA chip architecture, thereby furnishing autonomous driving capabilities for its forthcoming new vehicle models. Rivian has divulged that its upcoming R2 SUV will be outfitted with a proprietary chip, dubbed the Rivian Autonomy Processor 1 (RAP1), alongside a state-of-the-art LiDAR sensor. The harmonious interplay between these chips, sensors, and AI models will enable Rivian to incrementally attain autonomous driving proficiency in its fleet.
