Last Friday (local time), Waymo announced a software recall for its fleet of autonomous vehicles. This move came after Texas authorities reported that, since the beginning of the current school year, Waymo's self-driving cars had illegally passed school buses at least 19 times. In October of this year, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiated an investigation into how Waymo vehicles behave around school buses and demanded an explanation. Waymo's Chief Safety Officer explained that the voluntary recall aims to ensure that the vehicles can accurately decelerate and come to a complete stop in certain situations. He also mentioned that the software update already deployed has led to noticeable improvements. Waymo clarified that the issue stems from software glitches and assured that they would keep a close eye on the situation and make further updates as needed. A letter dated November 20th disclosed that the Austin Independent School District had documented five incidents involving Waymo vehicles even after the software update in November. The district urged Waymo to halt operations near schools during student arrival and departure times. However, Waymo declined the request, asserting that it would continue its services, convinced that the latest software update has rendered its vehicles' performance superior to that of human drivers.
