On December 4, the annual automotive reliability rankings released by Consumer Reports on Thursday showed that Tesla (TSLA.O) made its debut in the top 10, marking a significant shift for the electric vehicle maker, which was at the bottom of the list just a few years ago. With improvements in manufacturing processes and an electric drivetrain system praised as "outstanding" by the magazine, Tesla's reliability ranking rose to ninth among the 26 brands tested, a significant improvement from 17th place last year. In 2022, Tesla ranked 27th in reliability out of 28 brands. Despite ongoing issues with its electronically controlled door technology, Tesla has made overall reliability progress. Jake Fisher, Senior Director of Auto Testing at Consumer Reports, noted that Tesla's transformation was not sudden, emphasizing that the key lies in consistently producing highly similar models in the same factory over the long term and making continuous improvements. Older product lines almost always offer advantages in terms of product reliability.
