Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently shared crucial details about the Optimus humanoid robot on the social media platform X. He also took the opportunity to clarify some related terminology, ensuring that the media and the public have a precise understanding. Musk emphasized that Optimus is set to become a “Von Neumann Probe,” with its self-replicating ability being the linchpin for achieving large-scale production. He further specified that the plural form of the robot should be “Optimi.”

Optimus is earmarked as Tesla's flagship high-volume product. Musk projected that, eventually, its annual production could soar to hundreds of millions of units or potentially even surpass that figure. During the 2025 shareholder meeting, he highlighted that Optimus would experience the swiftest production ramp-up among Tesla's offerings. The initial production line at the Fremont factory is anticipated to churn out 1 million Optimi units per year. Meanwhile, the production line at the Texas Gigafactory is expected to reach an annual capacity of tens of millions of units.
