On November 26, reports surfaced indicating that the UK government is set to introduce a mileage-based tax for owners of electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs). Based on official documentation, starting in April 2028, EV owners will face a charge of 3 pence per mile driven, while PHEV owners will be liable for 1.5 pence per mile. By the end of the decade, this initiative is projected to generate approximately £1.4 billion (around $1.8 billion) in annual revenue for the UK.

Some regulatory authorities anticipate that this policy shift will lead to a decline of 440,000 in EV sales across the UK over the coming years. Delvin Lane, the CEO of charging infrastructure provider InstaVolt, emphasized that implementing such a system at this juncture might impose additional financial burdens, potentially dissuading prospective buyers from making the switch to electric vehicles.
