On October 29, General Motors announced that it had instructed nearly 5,500 employees across three of its manufacturing plants to go on unpaid leave. Specifically, 3,400 workers at Detroit's Factory Zero have been on unpaid leave since the summer. This facility is tasked with the production of the electric Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, and Hummer electric vehicles. General Motors will evaluate its production requirements and intends to rehire approximately 1,200 workers when the factory transitions to a single-shift schedule in January of the following year. The remaining 2,200 workers will continue on unpaid leave for an unspecified period. Moreover, General Motors has also implemented layoffs for 1,400 employees at the Ultium battery plant in Warren, Ohio, as well as for 710 employees in Spring Hill, Tennessee. According to a company spokesperson, around 850 employees at the Ohio plant are anticipated to resume their duties by May next year, while the job status of 550 others remains uncertain, potentially facing indefinite layoffs.
