Tesla has officially announced that the new Model Y High - Performance version comes equipped with a bidirectional charging capability, enabling both vehicle - to - home (V2H) and vehicle - to - load (V2L) functions. Prior to this, bidirectional charging was only officially available on the Cybertruck.

At present, to utilize this function, a Tesla charging port adapter is a must - have. For vehicle - to - load charging, the vehicle can supply power to external devices. It relies on an 82 kWh battery pack and can deliver a maximum output power of up to 11.5 kW through a compatible adapter.

This bidirectional charging feature will be activated via an over - the - air (OTA) software update, which is anticipated to be released in the fourth quarter of 2025. When it comes to the vehicle - to - home function, it necessitates pairing with Tesla's Powerwall 3 energy storage system. The cost for the relevant hardware and installation ranges from approximately $1,000 to $2,500.

Tesla also mentioned that more features will be rolled out through software updates later this quarter.

Although bidirectional charging has only been confirmed for the High - Performance version so far, it's worth noting that its onboard charger is identical to that of other refreshed Model Y variants. Moreover, Model Ys produced in the past few years already have the hardware foundation for bidirectional charging. So, it's expected that this feature will be gradually extended to other Model Y models in the future.
