On September 16th, numerous media sources reported that the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had launched a preliminary investigation into around 174,000 units of the 2021 Tesla Model Y. The probe centers on the functionality of the exterior electronic door locks. Specifically, the electronic door handles on this model cease to operate when the vehicle's voltage drops below a certain level, rendering it impossible to open the car doors manually. The NHTSA has received nine pertinent reports so far, all of which involve parents. In four of these cases, parents were forced to break the car windows to gain access to the vehicles. Initial findings from the investigation suggest that the malfunction of the electronic door locks may stem from insufficient voltage in the vehicle.
