On September 16, Reuters reported that the U.S. Department of Commerce announced on Tuesday its intention to evaluate industry pleas for imposing extra tariffs on a broader spectrum of imported auto parts, citing national security concerns, in the upcoming weeks. Earlier in May of the same year, the Trump administration slapped a 25% tariff on imported automobiles and parts, which collectively amounted to an annual value exceeding $460 billion. However, subsequent negotiations led to agreements with certain countries to reduce these tariffs. On Monday, the U.S. Department of Commerce indicated that domestic automobile and parts manufacturers, along with any relevant industry associations, have the opportunity to submit requests for the imposition of additional tariffs on a greater variety of parts.
