In early September 2025, a factory producing electric vehicle batteries—a joint venture between Hyundai Motor and LG Energy Solution—located in Georgia, the United States, became the target of a raid by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Nearly 500 workers were taken into custody during the operation, with around 300 of them being South Korean nationals. ICE authorities explained that these workers had either overstayed their visas or were working without the proper permits. Citing a report from NBC News, the detained workers, in an interview with The Korea Times, described being handcuffed and shackled before being transported to the ICE detention facility in Folkston, Georgia. During this process, their personal belongings and mobile phones were confiscated.
