On September 13, 2025, during the 2025 China Automotive Industry Development (TEDA) International Forum, Li Tianwei, who serves as the Director - General of the Atmospheric Environment Department at the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, pointed out that recent regulatory investigations had uncovered a concerning trend. Owing to the escalating cost pressures within the automotive industry, certain automakers were opting for low - cost precious metals in three - way catalysts. This move, however, was resulting in an increased risk of emissions.
Li Tianwei firmly stressed that automakers should never compromise on environmental performance simply to reduce costs. In the current year, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment is set to carry out random inspections. These inspections will focus on the consistency and compliance of newly manufactured vehicles. Additionally, the ministry will conduct a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the environmental protection information pertaining to new vehicles. Moreover, in collaboration with market regulatory authorities, the ministry will reinforce emission recall management measures.
