CATL's innovative sodium-ion battery has successfully cleared the certification requirements set by the new national standard, GB 38031-2025, titled "Safety Requirements for Power Batteries for Electric Vehicles." This milestone makes it the first sodium-ion battery globally to secure such certification. The new national standard is set to take effect officially on July 1, 2026, and it establishes rigorous safety benchmarks for batteries.

CATL's latest sodium-ion battery demonstrated exceptional performance during the certification tests. One of the key advantages of this battery is its potential to diminish reliance on lithium resources, a crucial consideration given the growing demand for electric vehicles. Additionally, it effectively tackles the challenges of low-temperature performance, which have been a persistent issue in colder northern regions.

In April of this year, CATL unveiled its new sodium-ion battery lineup, featuring the "New Sodium-ion Power Battery for Passenger Vehicles" and the "New Sodium-ion 24V Integrated Start-Stop Battery for Heavy Trucks." The passenger vehicle battery is engineered to overcome performance degradation in extreme cold, offering an impressive range, rapid supercharging capabilities, and an extended lifespan. Mass production of this battery is slated to commence in December.

Meanwhile, the new sodium-ion 24V integrated start-stop battery for heavy trucks is projected to begin mass production in June 2025. This development is poised to resolve numerous challenges associated with traditional lead-acid batteries, marking a significant advancement in the heavy-duty vehicle sector.
