Amtrak announced on Thursday the official commencement of operations for its new generation of Acela high-speed trains. These trains, which cost a total of $2.45 billion, are intended to elevate passenger experience along the Northeast Corridor stretching from Washington to Boston. Nonetheless, some of the initial new trains introduced into service have longer journey times compared to the existing fleet, with trips from Washington to Boston taking at least 7 hours and 5 minutes—exceeding the average travel time of 6 hours and 56 minutes. Amtrak has clarified that infrastructure limitations, including track conditions and power supply, are restricting speed. Over the next two years, Amtrak aims to progressively introduce 28 new trains while phasing out 15 older train sets.
