On August 22, following a report by Nikkei Asian Review alleging that Japanese automakers would shift some of the costs imposed by US tariffs onto American consumers, several prominent Japanese automakers clarified to CNBC that they had not raised their prices in the US market as a consequence. Earlier this year, in April, a 25% tariff was levied on Japanese cars. However, on July 22, after reaching an accord with the Trump administration, the tariff rate was reduced to 15%. Toyota emphasized on Thursday that the price adjustment made by its US subsidiary in July was a standard annual procedure and was unrelated to the tariffs. The company further stated that, despite ongoing government negotiations at the time, it would not pass on any additional costs to waiting customers by increasing prices.
