At the 2025 OpenAtom Open Source Ecosystem Conference, vivo proudly announced the official open sourcing of its Blue River OS kernel. This groundbreaking achievement marks the industry's first OS kernel to be entirely written in the Rust programming language, offering three distinct advantages: unparalleled security, lightweight efficiency, and versatile functionality. By harnessing Rust's robust memory safety mechanisms, the Blue River kernel ensures memory integrity both during compilation and at runtime, while maintaining an impressively minimal memory footprint of just 13KB. The kernel boasts compatibility with various architectures, including RISC-V and ARM, and supports POSIX interfaces. It integrates five core functionalities: system scheduling, memory management, file systems, networking, and device drivers. Additionally, it supports the TCP/IP protocol stack and Rust Zero-Copy technology. vivo has committed to furthering the development of the Rust language in China and will host the third Blue River OS Innovation Contest to nurture talent and innovation in this field.
