Apple is deploying new equipment in its retail stores that allows for inspection without opening product packaging, in response to issues of product returns and substitution involving iPhones and other items. Previously, employees had to open boxes to verify returned products, and once opened, the items could no longer be sold as brand-new, leading to inventory waste. The new equipment can scan and run diagnostic programs through the sealed packaging to confirm that the device is intact and in place, without damaging the packaging throughout the process. The inspected products can then be directly returned to inventory for sale.
