Propelled by robust pre-order enthusiasm, Apple has upped its 12-month order projection for its inaugural foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, from 9.7 million to 14 million units—a substantial hike of around 44%. Since pre-orders commenced on October 16, market response has significantly outstripped projections. In the U.S. market alone, within a mere 30 minutes of pre-order availability, shipping estimates for all models were extended to January 25 of the subsequent year.

The iPhone Duo initially encountered hurdles in its manufacturing process, particularly in assembly, display, and hinge production, leading to constrained initial supplies. Consequently, on the launch day, retail outlets might not have immediate stock for direct sales. The realization of the augmented orders will hinge on the progress of subsequent production and assembly efforts.

The iPhone Duo is set to officially hit the shelves on October 23, with a starting price tag of $1,999 in the U.S. market. Apple's foray into this segment is anticipated to spur growth within the foldable smartphone arena. Moreover, the resolution of ensuing supply chain capacity constraints will emerge as a pivotal factor in determining whether the ambitious annual shipment target of 14 million units can be attained.
