Recently, California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a privacy protection bill concerning wearable recording devices such as smart glasses in the United States. The bill originally planned to prohibit the use of such devices to secretly record audio and video without consent in places where others have a reasonable expectation of privacy, and required that relevant devices must display a prominent recording notice when they are put on the market. Newsom believed that the definition of 'wearable recording devices' in the bill was too broad and inaccurate, and that some of the newly added privacy protection measures overlapped with existing California laws, leading to his veto.
