The international repair experts at iFixit have unveiled a detailed teardown report on Apple's latest AirPods 5, awarding them a repairability score of 2. This marks a significant milestone, as it's the first AirPods model in nearly ten years to achieve a score higher than 0. The battery in this iteration can be extracted and replaced without causing damage. However, it's worth noting that the batteries in the left and right earbuds feature opposite polarities and distinct contact points, rendering them non-interchangeable. For more comprehensive repairs, destructive disassembly is still necessary. Additionally, the charging case presents its own set of challenges, being difficult to open and reassemble without incurring damage, thus posing considerable obstacles to the repair process overall. CT scan imagery featured in the teardown video exposes a highly integrated internal structure within the earbuds, with minuscule components such as the battery, MEMS microphone, and H2 chip densely packed within a limited space.
