Apple’s inaugural foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, is anticipated to hit the market in slightly over a month. However, the process of ramping up mass production is still ongoing. Foxconn's overall assembly yield rate currently stands at just over 60%, resulting in a constrained initial production volume. According to established benchmarks, it may require six months to a year for the yield rate to achieve a mature stage. The supply chain is closely monitoring whether Apple will loosen its stringent quality standards. The iPhone Duo has a stocking target of approximately 6 to 8 million units and a sales guidance exceeding 5 million units, significantly lower than the shipment volumes of mainstream Pro series models. The postponed market introduction of the device primarily stems from the delivery and subsequent adjustments of core components, such as foldable OLED panels and hinges. Issues related to hinges and creases pose substantial hurdles to mass production. To tackle the crease problem, Apple has formulated solutions encompassing three key areas: screen material, light reflection, and bending technique. Several pivotal manufacturing processes are handled by Chinese supply chain enterprises. For instance, Lens Technology supplies custom nano-textured UTG glass, while LY Technology provides precision hinge structural components. Additionally, several other companies are involved in battery cells, testing, and other processes. The Chinese supply chain has already advanced into the precision manufacturing phase. Currently, foldable smartphones remain a niche segment, with a projected global penetration rate of around 1.4% in 2025. Shipments in the first half of this year have witnessed a year-on-year decline. Many industry insiders harbor high expectations for Apple’s foray into this market, believing that leveraging its global sales reach, developer ecosystem, and supply chain influence, Apple could potentially unlock the foldable smartphone market and foster the growth of the software ecosystem. The inaugural year of the iPhone Duo’s market launch represents a crucial validation period, with sales anticipated to surge to 20 to 30 million units within the next two to three years, potentially establishing it as a cornerstone product for Apple.
